Among the unmanned aircraft, the "Jumbo" and the 3-ton eVTOL "AERIAL RIDER" aircraft will take off from Shanghai this year.

This news comes from ZTYT AerialRider (Tianjin) Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., which has just moved from Tianjin to Shanghai. 

This is an enterprise established by the main management and technical personnel of the former China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, Shuguang Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (ASUS®) and other well-known domestic enterprises for the reorganization of independent R&D and manufacturing of eVTOL aircraft. It is a technology-based intelligent manufacturing enterprise specializing in the manufacture of eVTOL, and the first tiltrotor manned autonomous drone (with a load of 1.2 tons and a take-off weight of 3 tons) will be officially put into the market before the end of March 2026.

The launch of this "Big Mac" may become one of the safest, most advanced and most competitive products in the eVTOL market.

On April 28, 2024, the day when "AERIAL RIDER" officially landed in Shanghai, in a super large plant with an area of 20,000 square meters and a floor height of 16 meters, CEO Li Xuan told the technology research and development and entrepreneurial story of the "AERIAL RIDER" team.

Question: Why did "Sky Wings" choose to land in Shanghai?

Li Xuan: After I left the listed company, I led the team to work in the field of UAV equipment systems, focusing on depicting the grand plan of low-altitude economy, and achieved fruitful scientific research results, forming a profound technical accumulation. Last year, our team reached a consensus with Zhongtian Yantou to jointly establish Feixia Intelligence, which will settle the main scientific and technological research and development, equipment manufacturing, project operation and management institutions from Tianjin to Shanghai, and start and complete the construction of Shanghai AIT (final assembly, general testing, general commissioning) center and MRO (manufacturing, maintenance, operation) center, forming a production base with an annual production capacity of 15,000 sets of large-scale unmanned equipment, which is rare in private enterprises.

Question: What are the technical advantages of "AERIAL RIDER"?

Li Xuan: At the beginning of our research, our technical team aimed at the most complex aircraft classification in the aviation industry, and the challenge was that the turbine shaft technology that China did not have at that time was applied to the field of unmanned aircraft. Turboshaft UAVs are our technological advantages, we are considered pioneers in small areas of this industry, and there may be very few that can really persist to this day and still have vitality.

We have R&D and manufacturing capabilities for core aircraft components, such as military-grade flight control systems, bus-type actuators that meet flight health management, and helicopter parachute systems that have global industry advantages. Among them, the team specifically presided over the design of the self-developed 5A-01 turboshaft unmanned helicopter and emergency parachute system to fill the domestic gap.

The independent research and development of the engine is also our core advantage, the engine of "AERIAL RIDER" uses the hybrid system and hydrogen energy system as the transitional power system, which can not only solve the problem of "short legs" caused by the lack of unit energy density of battery technology in the short term, but also take into account the high endurance time needs of special fields such as aviation emergency, police, medical treatment, etc., and when the battery technology can be broken through, the hybrid system can complete the power switch from oil to all-electric in a very short time, and quickly adapt to market changes. We have designed the interface so that the fuel can be changed directly, so there is no need to re-study new energy sources.

We have dozens of intellectual property rights, because when we did it, we found that there was no suitable design in China, and the structure and engine of the rotor and aircraft did not meet our requirements, so we designed it ourselves, changed it ourselves, adjusted it ourselves, built it ourselves, and experimented on it ourselves.

Question: I heard that "AERIAL RIDER" has brought together a strong group of expert consultants

Li Xuan: Our chief scientists include experts in fire safety science and engineering, several academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, national first-class referee of aeronautical models, member of the World Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Association (UVSInternational), and member of the World Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Remote Sensing Conference (UAV-g) Zhao Shuguang. In addition, Li Guangguang, a former instructor of an aviation school of the Air Force, is also a partner of the company, and Li Guangguang has trained more than 3,000 pilots of various types.

I have also served as a distinguished expert of a certain institute of the Aerospace Science and Technology Group to participate in national projects and a special expert of the national dual-use technology platform.

Question: What are the unique capabilities of "AERIAL RIDER" in terms of products?

Li Xuan: First of all, in terms of safety, my perception of aircraft has always been safety first, that is, risk first. My highest requirement for the technical team is to resolutely take flight safety as the first focus, from the beginning of the design, it has been aimed at the highest technical standards of civil aircraft, and the probability of each catastrophic failure state must be less than 1E-9/FH magnitude, we are reluctant to waste money, and will not let unnecessary losses occur, the company has not dropped an aircraft for more than ten years!

Secondly, in terms of products, the UAVs developed by the company can meet the needs of high altitude, long endurance and load flight, such as 5A09 UAVs and 9A01 UAVs, with a maximum take-off weight of more than twice the empty weight; The 5A03 adaptive UAV is specialized in extreme environments such as high altitude low pressure, low temperature, and high wind in plateau take-off and landing, and can fly under gusts of 8 and complete the flight test at an altitude of 4980m.

We also plan to fly over Mount Everest in the future. In 1972, the French won the world's highest helicopter flight record of 12,442 meters, which was completed near our Mount Everest, and the Chinese want to take it back!

Question: eVTOL will be one of the hottest tracks in the field of low-altitude economy, what is the layout of "AERIAL RIDER"?

Li Xuan: eVTOL is an inevitable choice for low-altitude aircraft within 10-15 years, and will fully replace the vast majority of the market for light helicopters. Based on the company's technology accumulation and overall advantages, we plan to build a prototype of a 2.6-ton, 6-seater eVTOL by the end of 2024 and conduct airworthiness certification. Our technology is built for high altitudes, long endurances, and heavy loads, so we're going to make rapid progress.

We are building a whole industry chain system of R&D, centralized procurement, manufacturing, sales and service, and gradually forming an annual production capacity of 15,000 sets of large-scale unmanned equipment, laying a solid foundation for entering the eVTOL market.

Question: What is the strategic plan and long-term goals of AERIAL RIDER?

Li Xuan: We believe that the low-altitude economy is not just about building airplanes and doing general aviation, the low-altitude economy is actually a whole industry chain economy, is the carrier of new quality productivity, and is essentially the stage of the development of the third generation of smart cities, with huge resource integration capabilities, and will also support 6G communication technology and low-altitude orbit satellite data applications in the future.

According to the development of the UAV application market, our strategic planning is simply six words "first load, then manned", first serving the load transportation market, including urban and rural governance, emergency rescue, agriculture and forestry plant protection, logistics and transportation, medical cold chain, etc., and then serving the manned navigation market including cultural tourism, air taxis, intercity navigation, etc.

It is expected that the company will have more than 1,000 drones in the next two years, accounting for more than 50% of the company's financial report, and our long-term goal is to be the "largest drone aviation operation service provider".
